About

I am interested in the idea of power as a performance, a process and not an object that can be contained or possessed (Foucault). I explore geopolitics, gender and their intersection through open-ended, process-led exploration of materials.

I work with objects, selecting some because of their cultural or political significance and others for their formal intrigue; often found or redundant objects of unknown origin with which I create a diverse body of work from drawings, sculpture to film and multimedia installations.

Some objects can stay with me a long time, in my head or sitting there in my tiny studio for ages. Other objects open the gate to a myriad of themes and memories which captivate my attention and calvinize my energy for research where I throw myself at the wave and respond to what comes out of the process. I often combine them with various other materials in time-based, improvised sculptures through actions resonant with Richard Serra’s Verblist (1967- 68).  More recently, in Ikhlas/Loyalty (2022) I decided to draw on the object of interest for the purpose of reconstructing an image of a person. Again, a performance of resistance on my behalf.

Carving time out of my busy life as a parent among other roles to devote time in the studio is a metaphorical action in assuming my power and agency as an individual by addressing my queries and conflicts on mind and body, work and play, art and life in the best way I know; a ritual of self-empowerment and a commitment to making my art.

The question I ask myself today is; what does it mean to be practicing today and in my particular complex and intercultural context?

The process teaches me to silence the thinking for a while and surrender power to the body where the works assimilate the subconscious and the condition of their coming into being for a more self-conscious and experiential study of power. A paradoxical action of taking power in the mindful decision to make, only to then lay it down to the body and the materials in search of new perspectives.
